Custom Jeweler’s Gallery
Wayzata MN
Husband & wife designers Patrick & Mary Kay, of Patrick Mohs Jewelry, reached out regarding a new Showroom Gallery, expanding their existing central studio to include the corner suite. Their directive bore a desire to use materiality to connect to the quiet sophistication of their clientele, balanced against the ability to feature their stunning pieces to full effect.
The existing space, once the pink-salt walls of the former ‘Himalayan Spa’ were removed, featured two contrasting window types: small square punched openings facing South and full-glass facing the street to the East. These two window types inspire a material bifurcation: the gallery area framed in burnished Venetian Plaster and cafe area cloaked in walnut; the two areas share, and make no effort to fight, the polished existing concrete floors or painted decking & sprinklers above.
The warmth of the discrete casework pauses, as delicate plaster planes fold toward the square windows, a moment where textures cross between palettes. A mobile quartzite island with heated top and workstation power moves below the perforated cove ceiling, for guests to comfortably review decisions over a specialty coffee or cocktail.
In a full-circle opportunity, Mark was able to hire them to design his wife’s engagement ring! Huge smiles all around, particularly Rachel with her ring.
